Secure AI vs. Perplexity

These two are less alike than the rest of the list: one is a search product, the other is a privacy layer over a chat product.

What the AI provider is told about you

Perplexity: Your account, with activity logged against it.

Secure AI: The question and the model to answer it. No account, no identifier.

Live web results with citations

Perplexity: The core of the product, and it is good at it.

Secure AI: Not what we are built for. For sourced answers from today's web, use the tool designed for that.

Using it without an account

Perplexity: Some use is possible without signing in, with limits.

Secure AI: Guest mode starts a conversation with no signup.

Third parties in the request path

Perplexity: A search product necessarily involves the sites and indexes it queries.

Secure AI: The AI providers listed on our sub-processors page, and nothing else.

This reflects each provider's default consumer experience at the time of writing. Provider features and policies change often, and vary by plan and region — check the provider for the current position. Product names are trademarks of their respective owners, used here for identification and comparison only.

Where Perplexity is the better choice

Perplexity is the better tool for a question whose answer lives on the web today and needs a citation. We do not try to be that, and a comparison pretending otherwise would be disproved in one query. Where this page applies is the ordinary case — asking a model something you would rather not have filed under your name.

Where our own protection stops

Secure AI removes the identity attached to your account, not identifying details you write into a message yourself. If you type your own name or address, that reaches the AI provider as you wrote it. And stored conversations are encrypted with a key we hold, so we remain technically capable of reading them.

The full account of what we can and cannot see is on our security page.

Questions

Does Secure AI search the web?

It is not what the product is built around. For sourced, current answers from the live web, a dedicated search product will serve you better.

Which should I use?

Both, honestly, for different questions. That is a strange thing for a comparison page to say, which is roughly the point.

Comparing more than one? the four-way comparison
